One for all and all for one! Gan Liang On behalf of BAA Previous message ------------------------------------- Dear Beida Alumni: Our Beida Alumna Tian-yan Liu, a graduate student at UH, need urgent help from all of us. We just got very bad news from her family in Beijing. Her father-in-law just passed away last week; several days ago, her mother was diagnosed to have late stage cancer and may only survive for 2-3 months. Tian-yan is now in deep sorrow. She needs support from us, both mentally and financially. She wants to go back to China and stay with her dearest mother but she could not afford the airline ticket and some medical cost for her mother for the following reasons: first, she is only a graduate student at UH relying on assistantship for living; she just got married a few months ago, and her husband (also our Beida alumni) came here a few months ago on F-2 visa and can not work; her mother's illness has took much money for medical cost. She would like to borrow money for purchasing an airline ticket and pay off some medical expenses for her mother's cancer treatment. As alumni to Tian-yan, we all feel deep sympathy for her. We Beida alumni in Houston area are just like a big family and should help each other. This is also one of the primary objectives of this Association: help alumni fellows when they need help. A Chinese proverb says: "One relies on parents at home and on friends when away from home"; another one says "One for all and all for one". Let us show our loving heart and extend our helping hands to help Tian-yan, we can not just watch her in a helpless situation. As a matter of fact, many alumni have expressed that they want to help her after hearing this bad news about Tian-yan. Some alumni said: "we alumni should help each other. Who knows someday I and you also need help from others? Helping others is also helping [grammar correction stops here---Yong] ourdelves". By the way, Tian-yan has been very supportive and contributed a lot of time to help the activities of Beida Alumni Association, maybe you still remember the girl who was helping alumni registration at the Peking University Centennial Celebration Party on 5/2/98, that is her. Tian-yan Niu said she would need to borrow at least a few thousand dollors at this moment for getting through this hard time, and she said she will return the borrowed money in about one year when she should have graduated and found a job in Chemistry. To assist Tian-yan to obtain a loan, our Beida Alumni Association (BAA) in Houston decide to set a program called Tian-yan Loan to help her. The process is the following: 1. Alumni fellows who want to help Tian-yan lend some money to BAA (without interest) in 10 days, BAA will cpollect the money and return an receipt to each alumni lender. 2. BAA will then lend the collected money as a whole to Tian-yan Niu. 3. Tian-yan will return the borrowed money to BAA when she find a job (in about one year), then BAA will return the borrowed money to each alumni lender. If alumni friends want to help Tian-yan, please mail your check to Dr. Keshan Zou, the Casher of Beida Alumni Assoction, payable to the order of Beida Alumni Association. Please indicate on the check by writing "For Tian-yan Lown". Please mail you check to address: Mr. Keshan Zou, 2018 Claire Ct., Sugarland, TX 77478. Please remember to mail out your check within one week. Let us extend our helping hands to help alumna Tian-yan Niu. You can lend $50, $100, $200, $500 or more, any help is greatly appreciated.
