Beida Alumni Association Sent Two Teams for the 1998 Houston
		 Hua Xia Cup Table Tennis Tournament

     On 7/8/98, our Beida Alumni Association (BAA) in Houston
sent two ping-pong ball teams to participate in
the 1998 HuaXia Cup Ping-pong Tournament. Team 1 had team members
Li Xida, Wang Yijie, Li Wen Zhi, He Dacheng. Beida Team 2 members were
Peng Chengbin, Zheng Changqing, Cai Baorong, and He Wei. There were in total 9
teams. Beida Team 1 beat  Fudan Team, Rice Team, and CAPST Team and
advanced to the second round, and then combated  the best five thrilling games
(3 sets per game) with Sina-professional club (the organizer) team, but
finally lost with
a score of 2:3 , only two points deficit in the third set of the game 5,  and
ended with a very regrettable team fourth place.  The Beida team 2 did not
advance to the second round. Our Team's good performance  has stunned some
experts and organizer  because  no one really expected our team to play that
well.
     In addition, team member Wang Yijie seized the Gold medal of the group
B in the man's single. He also obtained the bronze with teammate Li Wenzhi in
the men's double.
     Last Wednesday (7/6),  more than a dozen Beida alumni and their friends
went to the Houston Table Tennis Center to play for the  the team member
selection. Except for the above mentioned folks,   alumni  Cheng Ningya,
Liang Gan, Wen Zheng, Wang Cong, Hu Yuan, and non-alumni Wang Feng also
participated in the selection matches.
     The team members got very excited about the match.  This is the first
time our Association sent teams to this annual  Huaxia Cup tournament, and we
sent 2 teams!! The team members  felt that  playing ping-pong ball is  indeed
fun, an excellent recreation exercise and our association should organize or
participate in  more such activities in the future. They would like to
organize a ping-pong ball club in the future within the Beida Alumni
Association. We will announce more detail about the club and hope you can
join it.
